"NIGERIA IMPORTS OVER $8bn WORTH OF FURNITURE YEARLY - FAISAL JAFAR RAFINDADI"
Alhaji Faisal Ja’afar Rafindadi, the National Coordinator Katsina Furniture & Interior Expo maintains that, furniture making has grown beyond local production. He has therefore appealed to Katsina State government to partner with the Katsina State Furniture Workers Association especially in the area of machineries and infrastructure in order to boost the state contribution to the sector.
Alh. Rafindadi, sadly noted that, despite this progress in the sector, Nigeria imports over $8b worth of furniture on yearly basis. So in order to reverse, the trend, there is the need for the adoption of public private partnership in the furniture industry, to reduce the quantum of heavy import bill which is putting pressure on our foreign exchange reserve. The partnership would also boost revenue of the state while creating employment for Nigerians.
He further stated that: “If the government provides machineries and power, we have the skills to meet the furniture demand of the country.
Mr Rafindadi further called for the establishment of Katsina Furniture Market to accommodate all traders and those under apprenticeship so as to create an enabling environment for all.
Mr. Rafindadi, who specifically called for financial support from government under the present Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises entrepreneurship programme, added that the association would liaise with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council to see how it can be of assistance in encouraging the export of furniture and woods in the country.
Finally, the Project Coordinator, Mr. Rafindadi disclosed that plans are ongoing with the Katsina State Government, to organise Katsina Interior and Furniture Expo in order to enhance the market value of Made in Katsina Furniture.
The event which will hold from Monday, the 5th to 19th December, 2022 at the People’s Square opposite Muhammadu Buhari House, Katsina, is expected to host over 500 invited guests and members of the press and the Furniture Workers Association of both local and national participants from within and outside the state.
